Allegro MicroSystems Europe’s newly introduced A5988 drives up to two stepper motors or four DC motors. Each full-bridge output provides up to 1.6 A and 40 V. The A5988 includes a PWM current control (pulse width modulation) with a fixed off-time and non-linear 2-bit DACs (D / A) converter, with which stepper motors in full-, half- and quarter steps and DC motors in forward, can be controlled reverse and idle mode. The PWM controller uses Allegro’s patented mixed decay mode for lower noise, higher step accuracy and lower power consumption. The new driver is suitable for consumer and office equipment such as video surveillance (CCTV with pan and tilt), scanners, POS, laser, inkjet and label printers.
An internal control for the synchronous rectification reduces power dissipation in PWM mode. A low-power sleep mode provides additional power savings. Protection features include the thermal shutdown with hysteresis and undervoltage lockout (UVLO), and protection against crossover currents and overcurrent. A specific sequencing when switching is not required.
The A5988 is supplied in EV or JP-housing – with exposed terminals, to improve thermal performance. EV is a 6 mm × 6 mm, 36-pin QFN package with a height of 0.9 mm. JP is a 7 mm × 7 mm, 48-pin LQFP. Both housing are lead-free and equipped with 100% matte tin plated leadframe.
